Queer Affirming Therapy
“Queer' not as being about who you're having sex with (that can be a dimension of it); but 'queer' as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and that has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live”
-Bell Hooks

Fun Fact!
Sappho, a lyric poet who lived on the island of Lesbos in the 6th century BCE, is one of the most famous lesbian authors in history. Although her sexuality has been debated, she wrote passionate love poems about other women, celebrating the beauty and power of same-sex love. To Sappho, love is the force that drives the human spirit; the sole emotion upon which all of life's meaning is based upon. Her poems were so popular and influential that she became known as the "tenth muse" in ancient Greece. Today, Sappho's work is still studied and celebrated as a powerful expression of lesbian desire and identity, and the term "sapphic" is often used to describe love between women and trans femmes.
The Story of the Stonewall Uprising
The Stonewall Inn is considered the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The Stonewall uprising, which took place in New York City in 1969, was a crucial turning point in the history of the LGBTQ+ community.
Queer people (especially QTPOC) face all kinds of discrimination, harassment, and violence from both society and the police, even today. On the night of the Stonewall uprising movement, a group of Stonewall Inn patrons decided to resist a police raid. This led to several days of violent clashes, marking a new era of visibility and activism for the LGBTQ+ community.
This pivotal event inspired many individuals to come out and demand equal rights and protections. It is widely considered the catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, and it continues to motivate activists and allies worldwide to advocate for greater acceptance, equality, and inclusivity for everyone.
Black and Latinx activists like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, along with many others (including those whose names are not yet recorded in history), must be honored when discussing queer rights. Recognizing the history of trans and queer elders who faced immense challenges for living their truth and preaching love and acceptance in a world that didn’t make space for them is essential. They paved the way for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, gradually creating a more accepting and liberating world for all. Their courage and resilience laid the foundation for the progress we celebrate today and remind us of the ongoing fight for justice and equality.
